The SBE control unit is required in order to inform the airbag system whether or not the front passenger seat is occupied on vehicles equipped with a front passenger airbag. The system consists of a seat mat (film sensor) and the seat occupancy detection control unit. This control unit sends the status of the front passenger seat via a serial interface to the airbag control unit. The data is evaluated in the airbag control unit. Selective triggering of the airbag system, i.e. when the front passenger's seat is not occupied, prevents triggering of the front passenger's seat belt pretensioner and the front passenger airbag.

All work on the airbag system must only be conducted in ignition lock position 0.
